Join us on September 19th as we welcome Shay Anderson from Pricewaterhouse Cooper. Shay brings experience and observations on a range of topics including data visualization, data science, augmented reality, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and more. 

Shay currently works with the Forensic Technology Solutions: Investigative Analytics practice at PwC providing technical and analytical support to projects involving money laundering, information risk management, cybercrime, eDiscovery, compensation settlements, network breeches, and flagging suspicious transactions for investigation. He is an experienced systems developer and data manager with expertise in customizing dynamic dashboards/reports, creating effective information visualizations, bespoke infographics, social network diagrams, natural language processing, and process optimization.

Before joining PwC Shay had over 15 years of experience in the fields of financial and data analysis, and has worked with Fortune 500 companies, state and federal agencies, small businesses, as well as the US military. The focus of his work has been on incorporating graphic design principles to address client needs and updating outmoded systems and manual procedures through the targeted application of technology and process automation. He has experience working with many diverse data sets to include accounting and banking transactions, contracting and procurement files, transportation logs, asset management records, social media posts, geo-spatial locations, electronic communications, and message log files.

'Five Things' Presents: Nathan Manuel & David William, Artists (New York, NY)

Join us September 26th as we welcome Nathan Manuel and David Billy. Nathan and David are long time artists/collaborators and now as co-founders of the design studio Dutchess & The Queen (based out of Brooklyn, NY). 

+ Nathan Manuel (pictured) is an artist and educator living and working in Brooklyn, NY. His sculptures and collages combine personal narratives with references to modern painting. His academic exploration of art history is focused on making the utopian modernists relevant to our skeptical contemporary society. In addition to his individual practice, Nathan serves as head Doer-of-Stuff for Dutchess & the Queen, which he co-founded with David William. Nathan grew up in northeast Texas.

+ David William (a.k.a. D.Billy) is a Brooklyn-based artist and designer, whose whimsical work combines cartoonish objects, lettering, and symbols with rhythmic geometry and found images and language. In addition to his individual practice, David serves as chief Maker-of-Things for Dutchess & the Queen, which he co-founded with Nathan Manuel. David is a native of central New York state.

Five Things is pleased to welcome back Jennifer Trezza, China Practice Manager at SmithGroupJJR and Masters Candidate at Parsons School of Design. Jennifer has spent the past 15 years focused on storytelling through photography, graphic design, and journalism; incorporating PR and Communications strategies to elevate creative industry leaders within their target markets.

She recently joined SmithGroupJJR in August as their China Practice Manager, co-leading the Shanghai office operations and the launch of eight practice areas in the China market.

Jennifer is also a Global Executive Masters candidate at the Parsons School of Design in Paris, France, where she studies Strategic Design and Management with an international cohort of fifteen professionals. The program focuses on the processes and implementation of Design-Thinking. She has a BA in Political Science and Photography from The George Washington University.

Five Things is pleased to welcome Kirstin Falk, Managing Director, Marketing Innovation at Charles Schwab. Kristian has more than fourteen years of experience as a brand engagement strategist. She is the Co-Founder of Lifecycle Strategy Group, a consulting firm that provides branding and product strategy to companies passionate about creating social good. In early 2009, she spent the summer in Indonesia advising a Presidential campaign on its communications and new media efforts. Prior to that, she was the Chief Marketing Officer of AngelPoints, where she oversaw Product, Marketing, and Client Services and was responsible for creating a branding strategy that emphasized long-term relationship building. In 2005, Kirstin founded and was Chief Executive Officer of the New Progressive Coalition LLC, a technology start-up that pioneered a "political return on investment" methodology and created "Political Mutual Funds," an online e-commerce political giving product.

Five Things is pleased to welcome Drew Doggett on October 19th.

Drew is a photographer, director, and producer who focuses on places, objects, and cultures at risk of disappearing. His practice is characterized by his passion for exploring and telling stories while utilizing the discipline and sympathies he learned working in fashion photography. Through heightened tonal ranges highlighting emotion and an established and clear affinity for finding hidden textures and designs, Drew’s work celebrates the world’s diversity while also drawing attention to these real-time, ever-unfolding issues.

His photographic work can be found in private and public collections globally, notably the Smithsonian African Art Museum (DC). He has also been featured in many publications such as Photographer Magazine and Outside Magazine, and has been sponsored by brands like Hasselblad and Leica. Drew received his first film accolade at the Nikon Photo Contest in 2015 for his Dunes: Landscapes Evolving film.

Trained in the theatre by Lee Strasburg and Kim Stanley as a young woman in NYC, Elisabeth Noone has also studied with Stella Adler, Elaine Aiken, John Mace of the Vocal Arts Foundation; Joy Zinomon of The Studio Theatre and toured with the J. J. Barry Improvisation Group. In LA, Elisabeth continues her theatrical studies with the famed dialectician Robert Easton.

Elisabeth has had recurring roles on "The Wire", "The Bold and the Beautiful",  and guest star roles in "Criminal Minds" and others as well as a leading role in the independent film "Just Desserts". Elisabeth conducts extremely successful on camera and voice over workshops and inspired the careers of many successful newcomers. Elisabeth has won Cleo, Regional Emmys Telly, ITVA and Peer Awards for her performances. 

After 40 years of delivering the written word in theatre, film, television and radio, Elisabeth is now writing a play and a series of memoirs for others to interpret.

Melissa Silverstein is a writer and speaker with an extensive expertise in the area of women and Hollywood. She is the founder and publisher of Women and Hollywood, one of the most respected sites for issues related to women and film as well as other areas of pop culture. Women and Hollywood educates, advocates, and agitates for gender diversity in Hollywood and the global film industry.  She is the Artistic Director and co-founder of the Athena Film Festival -- A Celebration of Women and Leadership -- at Barnard College in NYC. The 7th annual festival will take place from February 9-12, 2017.

Melissa recently received the Marie C. Wilson Emerging Leader Award from the Ms. Foundation for Women. In 2015 she was selected to be a film envoy for the American Film Showcase, the major film diplomacy program of the U.S. Department of State. And she published the first book from Women and Hollywood, In Her Voice: Women Directors Talk Directing, which is a compilation of over 40 interviews that have appeared on the site. 

She has written for The Washington Post, NY Times, Forbes, More Magazine and has been featured on CNN, the BBC as well as in Newsweek, Salon, Chicago Tribune, Washington Post, NY Times, and many other publications. She was a contributor to The Tattooed Girl: The Enigma of Stieg Larsson and the Secrets Behind the Most Compelling Thriller of Our Time.

In 2013, she was one of the recipients of the Susan B. Anthony Award from the NYC Chapter of the National Organization for Women. She is an Advisory Board member to Project Greenlight Digital Studios, and is a member of the Alliance of Women Film Journalists and NY Women in Film and TV.

STORY Event Series Opening Event - The Mattress Factory Contemporary Art Museum (Pittsburgh, PA)

STORY Event Series is pleased to announce our latest partnership, this time with world-renowned contemporary art museum The Mattress Factory. Founded by artist Barbara Luderowski in 1977, Pittsburgh’s Mattress Factory is "one of the most innovative – and under-appreciated – galleries in the US".

Located on the North Side/Mexican War Streets area of Pittsburgh, the museum is celebrating it's 40 year anniversary. The gallery now has 17 permanent pieces, including three by James Turrell and two by Yayoi Kusama.

The STORY Event Series is pleased to collaborate with The Mattress Factory bringing the series to Pittsburgh as part of it's efforts to expand programming.

We'll be holding our first event in November - just as the Museum begins celebrations (events, exhibits) around its 40 year anniversary.

On September 12th we're pleased to launch the Five Things virtual event series by featuring one of our most popular speakers from the STORY Event Series -  artists and creativity consultants Noah and Mica Scalin. They just published their latest book entitled "Creative Sprint: Six 30-Day Challenges to Jumpstart Your Creativity".

+ Noah Scalin is an artist, author, and activist. He founded Another Limited Rebellion in 2001. Noah has traveled the world bringing his message of creative practice to everyone from incarcerated teenagers to Fortune 500 executives. A graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of The Arts, Noah started his career as the Art Director for Troma Entertainment and Avirex Clothing. Noah's artwork is collected internationally and has been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries, including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Mütter Museum and Krause Gallery in NYC. He is the author of six books on creativity, art & design—most recently Creative Sprint which he co-wrote with his sister/business partner Mica. In 2016 Noah was chosen as the first ever artist-in-residence at the Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Business.

Mica Scalin is a professional enthusiast and creative instigator. An innovator in the use of art and media for community engagement and creative development for over a decade she has worked with individual artists and for Showtime, CBS and NBC Universal. She was the Head of Communications for the groundbreaking non-profit JDub and has produced and curated numerous art and cultural exhibitions and events. From grassroots to broadcast, her passion lies in creating cultural experiences that make meaningful connections between people. She has a BFA from the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC. Mica joined ALR in 2012 but has been getting into her brother Noah's things her entire life.

STORY Event Series Presents: Storytelling & VR + Latest VR Innovations (Demo)

The STORY Event Series is pleased to announce a special program happening along side the STORY event the evening of Monday, September 18, 2017. At 7:00 PM we'll bring together the top companies in the Washington, DC area doing virtual reality (VR) and storytelling (Interface Media Group) along with one of the top companies in the nation doing VR innovation (NotionTheory) for a special demo. This is an excellent event to attend for both those who are new to VR and want to learn more/ask questions and those who have been exposed to VR and want to see/demo some of the latest innovations

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Both events will be held at Interface Media Group in Washington, DC. When you arrive you will be given directions to event location.

* Tickets to this event are being sold in addition to tickets to the STORY event. You can register for one without registering for the other. Tickets for both the STORY event and the VR demo are $25.

* The VR demo event will take place from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM. If you register for the VR demo and the STORY event, you are welcome to slip out of the STORY event (at selected times) and participate in the VR demo or you can wait until after the STORY event.

The common thread through the series of talks is "story" - interpreted across a range of professional disciplines.
