Monday's Kick - August 14, 2017

Daniela Soto-Innes - Chef, James Beard Award Winner (from MM.LaFleur)    HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM, HITTING THE GAS, BEETHOVEN, & THE MICHELIN MAN Today's 'Kick' is dedicated to my mother who turns 77 this week. One of my mothers' favorite pieces of music is "Ode an die Freude" (Ode to Joy) Symphony #9 by Beethoven. You might be surprised (as I was) the number of Flashmob tributes that have taken place over the years from all over the globe (to the music, not my mom). Here are just a few: Leipzig, Germany Sabadell, Spain Hong Kong, China Nürnberg, Germany Tokyo, Japan I can't think of a better way to spend a Monday morning - listening to timeless music and thinking about one of the most beautifully complex women alive. Happy birthday Mom.   PROFESSIONAL THIS & THAT We're moving at full speed now. We've partnered with The Mattress Factory, and we're set to launch our new STORY series called 'Five Things' in September. We'll be launching the 'Five Things' website in the next day or two. Stay tuned for the announcement. We're also wrapping up the list of speakers for our next in-person STORY event (also in September). If you're following STORY Events, you'll want to follow us on Facebook and Twitter.  This week we go back to Elizabeth, PA to further efforts on our book 'On Work' and we start our travels north by visiting Cleveland (both for the book and for a personal interest). We'll eventually make our way to the SW corner of New York - but more to come on that. We also meet with our friends at the Bayer Center for Non-Profit Management in Pittsburgh for a potential collaboration. It will be great to reconnect with these good people, doing fantastic work for non-profits in SW PA.   WHAT HAS GOT OUR EYE THIS WEEK I *adore* this brand. MM.LaFleur tagline is "Make sure your clothes are the least interesting thing about you". Yes, this is a high-end, luxury clothing brand. The point? We (women) should be spending time on more purposeful matters than shopping. Check out their new campaign, called #BetterThingsToDo. Their customers upload pictures of themselves ... "living, working, playing, & running the world" - because "you have better things to do than shop".  Today the Michelin Man turns 119. To prove that there is a fascinating story behind just about everything, read this.  If you are an executive in the creative/advertising/branding field, then you probably know about PFSK. If you are just someone who likes to follow consumer trends and insights reporting, you should know about PFSK. A great resource to have as part of your creative toolbox. I have really come to like Atlas Obscura - a publication that combines story with travel (and approaches it quite differently from other types of story + travel publications). Here is an example - in honor of the eclipse coming up on the 21st, here is a great article - "A Century of Eclipse Watching, In Photos". A great article on why companies can no longer avoid AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality).  Have a good week!
